FAQs
Do I need to Antifoul my boat?
Yes, antifouling your boat is essential if you keep it in the water for extended periods as is typical on the Gold Coast Broadwater area or Tweed River. Antifoul paint prevents marine growth like barnacles, algae, and slime from attaching to the hull. Without it, your boat’s performance, fuel efficiency, and hull integrity can be seriously affected over time. It is one of the prime defences against rapid ageing and degradation of your vessel. If you don’t clean the bottom of your boat, marine organisms will build up, creating drag that slows you down and increases fuel consumption. Over time, unchecked growth can damage your boat’s hull, lead to corrosion (especially for metal hulls), and reduce the lifespan of your vessel.
Does Antifoul alone protect from osmosis?
No, antifoul paint does not protect your boat from osmosis. Antifoul is designed to prevent marine growth, not water ingress. To protect against osmosis — the blistering and damage caused by water penetrating the hull — you need a dedicated epoxy barrier coat. Lightning boat builders apply an epoxy primer before antifouling at locations like the gold coast broad water and Tweed River to create a waterproof layer that helps guard against osmosis, especially on fiberglass hulls.
How long does
Antifoul last?
The lifespan of antifoul paint typically ranges from 12 to 24 months depending on the type of antifoul, how often you use your boat, and the water conditions. Some high-performance or hard antifouls can last longer, but many boat owners schedule antifouling annually for best protection. How much does it cost to Antifoul a boat?
The cost to antifoul a boat in Australia specifcally on the Broadwater and Tweed area ,typically ranges from AUD $800 to $4,000 or more. Prices vary based on the size of your boat, the type of antifoul paint used, and whether any preparation work like sanding or blasting is required. Professional boatyards may charge additional fees for haul-out and environmental disposal of old paint, this is standard practice, Lightning boat builders run lower overheads than large yards so we aim to stay on the right side of competitive for your and your needs whilst being location versatile for your convenience.
Why detail my boat?
Boat detailing is important for both appearance and protection. Regular detailing removes salt, grime, and oxidation that can damage the gelcoat, paint, and metal surfaces. It helps prevent long-term corrosion, UV damage, and staining. Beyond preserving resale value, a well-detailed boat performs better and stays structurally sound longer. During the Detailing our team also keep an eye out for early signs of issues like cracks, blisters, or worn seals that could become costly repairs if left untreated.
